Navigation

For Navigation we trust in three different things

Garmin nüvi 1430

The Garmin nüvi 1430 is great because its big display enables us a bit bigger overview than most smaller models. So far the Garmin has been real good but during the last weeks its seems to get some problems. One problem is that the software more and more often tries to send us to our requested destination via a detour to either Cape Town or Johannesburg. The other problem is that it keeps switching itself off at the most inconvenient moments.

The Tracks 4 Africa maps

The Tracks 4 Africa maps are great and travelling the southern part of Africa would have been a lot more difficult without them! A lot of offroad routes are available and also many accomodation options are included in there. But don’t rely on the navigation in big cities like Durban or Cape Town.

Various road maps (Tracks 4 Africa, ++++, ++++)

GPS navigation is great but we wouldn’t feel safe without a proper paper map. It is hard to keep an overview of your location just on a small GPS screen. And the GPS isn’t always right. Sometimes it has some locations saved with wrong coordinates. Our map has more than once saved us the detour proposed by our GPS.
